Gauß-Professur

Die Gauß-Professur gibt hervorragenden Wissenschaftlern des Auslands die Möglichkeit, als Gast der Akademie eine Zeitlang gewissermaßen den Lehrstuhl von Carl Friedrich Gauß einzunehmen. Die Professur wurde zum hundertsten Todestag des bedeutenden Mathematikers eingerichtet, der von 1807 bis zu seinem Tod 1855 Direktor der Göttinger Universitätssternwarte war.
Der Forschungsaufenthalt ist mit keinerlei Verpflichtungen verbunden. Der Gast hat jedoch das Recht, an der Universität Vorlesungen oder Vorträge zu halten und an den Sitzungen der Akademie teilzunehmen.
Über den Preisträger entscheidet die von der Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Klasse eingesetzte Gauß-Kommission. Vorrang haben Wissenschaftler, die sich um die von Gauß vertretenen Fächer Astronomie, Geophysik, Mathematik und Physik verdient gemacht haben.
