Gauss Professorship

The Gauss Professorship gives outstanding scientists from abroad the opportunity to in a way occupy the chair of Carl Friedrich Gauss for a time as a guest of the Academy. The professorship was established to mark the centenary of the death of the important mathematician, who was director of the Göttingen University Observatory from 1807 until his death in 1855.
The research stay is not associated with any obligations. However, the guest has the right to give lectures or talks at the university and to attend plenary sessions of the Academy.
The Gauss Commission appointed by the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Class decides on the winner. Priority is given to scientists who have rendered outstanding services to the subjects of astronomy, geophysics, mathematics and physics represented by Gauss.
