Yearbook of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities

The Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Lower Saxony, one of the most long-standing institutions of its kind, brings together scholars from a wide range of disciplines. The Yearbook traces the development of the Academy within a financial year. In addition to the annual report, the prize-winners and list of members, the Academy’s research projects and selected lectures are here presented to the public. The Yearbook can be purchased as a printed work from Göttingen University Press (for 2017 and following years) and from De Gruyter (for years up to 2016), or downloaded free of charge as a PDF file.

Academy in Conversation

Academy in Conversation is the latest publication series released by the Göttingen Academy. It is comprised of Academy members’ lectures given at internal plenary sessions, touching on issues of general societal interest. These include currently relevant topics such as ‘Focus on Europe’, ‘Migration’, and ‘Disaster Scenarios’, or themes of general interest like ‘Life and Death’. The booklets can be purchased in print from Göttingen University Press or downloaded free of charge as a PDF.

Papers of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities - New Edition

The New Papers of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities are the Academy’s most important scientific publication. They are part of a long and illustrious tradition: between 1752 and 1842, the Academy, then still called the Königliche Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften (‘Royal Society of Sciences’), published its Comentarii or Comentationes in Latin. Outstanding scholars such as Haller, Gesner, Blumenbach, Heyne and Gauß published their work in this series. Since 1842, the Academy has released its papers in German, publishing the research results of Academy members, employees of Academy research initiatives and invited scholars. Like the predecessor series, the New Papers contain textual works on the humanities and natural sciences. The Papers of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities - New Edition can be purchased from De Gruyter or downloaded as a PDF.

Göttingen Scholarly Reports

The Göttingischen Gelehrten Anzeigen (‘Göttingen Scholarly Announcements’), founded in 1739, is the oldest reviewing body still in existence in the German language. Albrecht von Haller, the first president of the then-named Königliche Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften (‘Royal Society of Sciences’), gave the journal, which was first called Göttingische Zeitungen von Gelehrten Sachen (‘Göttingen Newspapers of Scholarly Affairs’), its face: the striving for polyhistorical versatility; penetrating, rigorous and productive criticism; as well as maintaining the closest scholarly connection possible with foreign countries. With the 260th volume – in keeping with Albrecht von Haller’s broad interdisciplinary orientation and his interest in the unity of knowledge – the subject spectrum of reviewed books was expanded. Since then, in addition to the fields of the humanities already represented, new publications in political science, economics and finance as well as natural science have been reviewed, provided they are relevant to the humanities, such as current developments in the life sciences. The Göttingen Scholarly Announcements can be purchased from Vandenhoek & Ruprecht or downloaded as a PDF.

Notes for Authors

Dear Authors,

The Göttingen Scholarly Announcements (GSA) traditionally cover all areas of the humanities, especially the philological and historical sciences, including theology, as well as selected topics in the natural sciences that are relevant to a broader public. They appear twice a year in a total volume of 20 sheets – 320 pages. The publication offers space for critical, extensive, detailed reviews that further the discussion of noteworthy new publications. Short notices or merely laudatory mentions of a book are not accepted.

As an approximate standard length of a review, 12 to 15 GSA-printed pages has proven to be appropriate, including all annotations, so that about 9 to 12 contributions fill an issue. One printed page of the GSA corresponds to approx. 3,000 characters (including spaces).

Further details can be found in the information sheet for the staff of the Göttingen Scholarly Announcements, which also contains the typographical set-up.
