Online portal “Residence Cities in the Holy Roman Empire”
The new digital offering, which you can access here, serves to provide public access to the research results developed in the three departments of the project, which will be published in an eleven-volume handbook.
The first two volumes of Section I, “Analytical Directory of the Residence Cities” on the residence cities in the north-east and the north-west of the Holy Roman Empire and the two first volumes of Section II, ”Social Groups, Economies and Political Structures in Residence Cities” and III, “Representations of Social and Political Orders in Residence Cities” with exemplary studies, have been published in print to date. The first two volumes of Section II “Social groups, economies, and political structures in residential towns” and Section III “Representations of social and political orders in residential towns” contain exemplary studies on selected residential cities in the north of the Holy Roman Empire. The subsequent volumes will each be added to the online portal after a two-year Moving Wall period following their publication: 2024 vol. I,2 on the residential cities in the north-west of the Holy Roman Empire and vol. II,2 and III,2 with further exemplary studies on the residential cities in the south of the Holy Roman Empire, 2025 the vols. I,3: Residence cities in the Southwest (Upper Rhine and Swabian Imperial Circles) and I,4: Residence Cities in the Southeast (Franconian, Bavarian and Austrian Imperial Circles, Kingdom of Bohemia, Silesian Principalities), 2026 finally the systematic vols. II,3, and III,3, which present the state of research according to the subject matter.
The digital offering focuses primarily on the articles of Section I. For the time being, the new portal contains 186 individual articles on the residential cities of the northeast. II,1, and III,1 will be linked to the corresponding articles as PDF files.
It offers
- a convenient full-text search with close linking of the individual articles, which are also made available as PDF files,
- a cartographic view that allows the localisation of the individual town, but also makes the spatial distribution of the residence cities visible,
- in the future, a timeline that provides information on the appearance of residence towns at different times,
- in the near future, a link to the online offer of the predecessor project “Courts and Residences” will also be realised.
