Schleiermacher Critical Edition

Theologian, pedagogue, philosopher and psychologist

Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher was an important scholar during the first and golden period of Berlin University. The Protestant theologian, philosopher, pedagogue, psychologist and hermeneutist, who was born in Breslau in 1768 and died in Berlin in 1834, was stimulating in manifold spheres. In Berlin, he was an official preacher, university professor and member of the Academy. He provided formative impulses for the modern reform of theology as well as of the German university. In theology and philosophy, he formulated an original position between enlightenment, German idealism and romanticism.  His translation of Plato’s works is still well-renowned today. His sermons left lasting impressions, were well-frequented and were widely read over decades. In the frame of a research project, the Goettingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities – currently in cooperation with the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities – has been working on a historical-critical complete edition of Schleiermacher’s works and letters since 1984.
